Before we dive into today’s episode, I want to share some love from my pageant sister on Amazon, Danielle writes:
This is quite an amazing book. Not only does Alycia break down every aspect of becoming a successful queen, but she infuses her writing with enough love to help guide just about anyone to becoming a better and happier human being! This book is not just for someone who wants to win a pageant, it’s for any woman who wants to become the best version she can be. I loved reading this book! I feel like a winner already.

Danielle Amazone Review for 106

Today, we’re talking pageant roommates. Often, we feel like a roommate is more our competition, but really most pageant women just want to love and be loved.

You’ve heard the scary stories of nair in shampoo, ripping zippers out, or hogging all the closet space. Crazy stuff does happen, but this isn’t the norm. However, competition and exhaustion and the emotional rollercoaster of pageantry often brings out the worst in people. So, you’ll have to actively prepare to be a good friend and earn a good friend in your pageant roommate.

My first pageant roommate experience was with a woman who also was competing in her first state pageant. Shannon was a beautiful woman with olive skin, voluminous jet black hair and perfect makeup. I was instantly intimidated, but she was so sweet! During pageant week, she had her mom pick up a beautiful and generous gift – this was a surprise to me, since we were both vying for similar positions in the top 10. Fortunately, we made it to the top 10 and became good friends. I visited her at college, she flew to Illinois to see me compete. I later had the pleasure of watching her win Miss Pennsylvania and was in tears as though I had won since I’d followed her journey for 5 years.

My most recent pageant roommate was in California. A woman I’d competed with a few years prior (when I placed first runner up) was competing again and actually reached out to me to see if I’d room with her. I did and she was such a sweetheart, down to earth and really made the week lovely. We kept a healthy distance and still supported one another. Later that year, I was able to do an appearance at an event where her art work was being honored and it was a beautiful moment to celebrate each other’s success.

I have 5 tips to help you make friends with your pageant roommate – and ensure she won’t put nair in your shampoo. 🙂

1. Expect acceptance

2. Bring a Thoughtful Gift

*Proverbs 18: 16 A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.*

3. Acknowledged your needs and respect hers

4. Communicate with love

5. Avoid Negativity and Encourage Positivity

Keep the vibes high, not low!

Pageants have a wonderful opportunity for friendship. And I hope you experience that element of pageantry as I have been blessed to.

Because, that, my dear is how you truly win a pageant.
