I believe in a pageant interview, you don’t need to know the questions as long as you know the answers. So, I wanna teach you how to come up with a bunch of awesome answers through the art of story telling. Stories are the basis of human connection. We are able to connect with people through sharing stories and understanding where someone else came from based on what they’ve experienced. The best communication happens when people know you, like you and trust you. Knowing how to tell a good story is key to getting people to know, like, and trust you!

If you can tell a good story, you’ll help others to understand you and feel like they know you, plus if you’re authentic and tell your story in a real way. And, if you’re fully honest your story will align with your actions and that congruence will help people know, like, and trust you….leading to BIG success in your communication.

Good stories are memorable, inspiring, entertaining, and repeatable.

They include characters, setting, a challenge and a big win. Too many details can get confusing, and too little details can be boring. The details should enhance the point of the story and not distract from the main idea. Good stories leave the listener with a knowledge nugget that inspires them.

Here’s the process to creating a great story:

+ Consider a moment that changed you – look for big shifts in thinking and action
+ Why do you want to tell this story (make it about them, not you) – that’s your knowledge nugget/take-away/main point
+ Chronological ingredients – beginning, middle, end
+ Cut out the fat – boring details
+ Add some spice for flavor – emotional details (personal attributes, values, characteristics) The JUICE!
+ Let it marinate for just enough time
+ Practice the recipe to see if you get your listener to the knowledge nugget.

PRO TIP: put the knowledge nugget on your factsheet in an interesting way so that you encourage the judges to ask you a question that will set you up to answer with your awesomely thought-out story so they know you, like you, and trust you.

That, ladies is how you win a pageant!
