A few weeks ago I was watching my church’s live stream a sermon. The pastor started by holding up a $20 and inviting anyone to come get it. A few people stood up. But with a whopping 500 people at the service, why didn’t 500 people stand up?
They thought someone else would get there before them and their efforts would be wasted.
They thought they’d look greedy, rude, or poor and didn’t want to be judged.
They thought it was a joke and maybe he wouldn’t give it away after all and then they’d feel stupid for running up.
It was more trouble to get out of their seat then the value of a $20.
Everyone was invited to come get the money, but only a few people moved, and ONE of those people was $20 richer that night.
His sermon talked about how God wants to give us stuff, but how lazy we are to go get it. Today, I want to talk about the difference between ability to have what we want and willingness to go and get it!
Able is having access to the resources to achieve what is great. It’s like when you are able to walk. That doesn’t mean you’re never gonna sit, but you are able to walk if you are willing.
Willing is the desire to take action in one direction by leaving the comfort of another.
Ability is being able to walk. Willingness is standing up from your comfortable couch.
It’s like this. Let’s say you’re watching a great tv show. It’s late and your thirsty and tired and enjoying the show so much you don’t want to get up for a cup of water. You’re able to go quench your thirst, but you aren’t willing to leave the comfort of your couch to do so. You just want someone else to bring you a cup or a magical fairy to make you no longer thirsty.
This is how some people live their whole lives…waiting around for opportunities to come to them rather than reaching out and taking them. It’s not complex, but it’s not easy.
“If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.”
I’m breaking it down into a simple process. Doing the work is going to be the hardest part.
1. List your goal.
2. List the top 3 things getting in the way of your goal
that you could control (what makes you unable)
3. Ask yourself if you are willing to change what you need
to in order to get what you want.
If no, then find a new goal.
If yes, then make an action plan to get where you want to go!
EXAMPLES:
Goal: lose weight
In the way: love of food, sugar cravings, no gym access
Are you able? Yes
Are you willing to give up sugar, change your food habits and work out from home?
Goal: get a job that pays $100,000
In the way: Education, move to a big city, network of people
Are you able? Yes
Are you willing to move, go back to school, build a network of people
Goal: win the pageant
In the way: don’t know what to change, not enough money for wardrobe, time for appearances/platform
Are you able? Yes
Are you willing to save your money, start promoting your platform, get a coach to learn what you need to change.
Now it’s your turn – go write down the things getting in your way of winning your pageant. Ask yourself if you are willing to overcome these.
It’s not “Can You?” It’s “Will You?”
If yes – START IMMEDIATELY!
Because that, my dear, is how you win a pageant.
